PREMAS® Inspection: From Critical Belt Condition to Planned Maintenance
Wear is a natural part of operating bulk material handling equipment. What makes the difference is knowing the condition of critical components early enough to act. A PREMAS® Inspection helped one customer turn a critical belt condition into a planned maintenance decision – with the replacement prepared before an emergency response became necessary.
Wear is part of operation – unplanned downtime does not have to be
Bulk material handling equipment operates under demanding conditions. Continuous loads, material characteristics and operating conditions place mechanical components under stress throughout their service life. Even robust, high-quality equipment is therefore subject to wear over time. Regular inspection and maintenance are an essential part of safeguarding long-term reliability and availability.
For operators, the challenge is not simply that components wear. It is knowing how their condition is developing and when action is required.
Without regular condition assessment, developing wear may remain unnoticed until visible symptoms appear or an unplanned intervention becomes necessary. Identifying critical conditions early creates the opportunity to prioritise maintenance and prepare the necessary measures in advance.

A critical belt condition identified
During a PREMAS® Inspection at a customer’s plant, the belt condition of a bucket elevator used to transport raw meal to a silo was assessed as critical.
Following the inspection, AUMUND’s technical managers visited the plant to assess the situation and discuss the findings directly with the customer. Based on the inspection results, the recommendation was to address the belt at the next major scheduled shutdown. At the same time, the customer ordered a replacement belt from the local AUMUND office.
The inspection had therefore provided more than an assessment of the belt’s condition. It gave the customer the information needed to prepare the required intervention.
The inspection finding was confirmed
When the belt of the bucket elevator was eventually replaced, the critical condition identified during the PREMAS® Inspection was confirmed: the belt had already torn at the joint.
The decisive difference was that the customer was prepared.
The replacement belt had already been ordered and the intervention had been planned around a scheduled shutdown. According to the case documentation, extensive machine damage and unnecessary downtime were avoided, while the financial impact was substantially reduced compared with an emergency response.
Planning security instead of emergency response
For the customer, the benefit was clear: the critical condition was known, the replacement could be prepared and the intervention could be planned.
The case shows why regular condition assessment is an important part of maintaining bulk material handling equipment throughout its operating life.
