Full contract for two rotary incinerators

Waste disposal plant
The core elements of this German customer’s thermal residue utilisation plant are two rotary furnaces. The plant has been operating since its installation in 1973 for waste disposal by incineration.
A rotary incinerator is a tube-shaped furnace with two kiln tyres welded on to the furnace shell to form a solid unit with the furnace tube. Four rollers enable the incinerator to rotate. Once a day these two identical rotary furnaces move into the upper position and then back into the lower position.
After so many years of operation, distortion and clear signs of corrosion made an overhaul imperative, especially of the rotary kiln outlets including L-section rings, the outlet segments, and components of the air pockets. Modifications and repairs were carried out on the furnace inlets, for example renewing the graphite block seal and cable winch system. The discharge hoppers and pendulum flaps on both kilns were also modified.
The Field Service team was confronted with challenges. For the entire duration of dismantling and assembly one of the two furnaces remained in operation, which made working conditions difficult. The work had to be carried out in the very limited space available, and kiln repairs were undertaken in several trades simultaneously. As a consequence of the tight space some of the components had to be divided into sections and subsequently reassembled.
After the intensive assembly and repair measures the Field Service team was proud to announce the successful conclusion of the job. All adjustments were carried out with great care, and the furnaces are now operational. Audit measures to prevent potential future problems have already been programmed for the next shutdown periods.
